It all starts with that question that's probably next to ask after inquiring about a new acquaintance's name and the year level she's in. Math, I say, with the difficulty of pronouncing the th with braces. Armed with more than two years of experience of college getting-to-knows, I anticipate what's next to answer.
Ah, so magaling ka sa Math?
The seemingly right thing to say here is, Hindi naman. But then again, the reply may just be a, Duh, of course, disguising to be a humble response. I try to skip the misinterpretation by saying, Gustong maging magaling, hoping it's just taken word for word. People always say then that Math majors, being Math majors, must have an edge in Math. And we're back to square one. Unless I hear...
E 'di magtuturo ka?
Not that there's anything wrong with teaching (I look up to my profs, really) but there is a number of fields Math majors can venture in. Sabi sa freshie kit ng MMC, Actuarial Science, Operations Research, Math Biology, and even Cryptography! Cool.
When acads, prof, and more acads fuel the convo, the next query will probably be...
May thesis din kayo?
This, I simply answer with a yes. I don't have anything to say about thesis, I'm still on my way there. I wonder, though, why people assume we don't have thesis. (May course bang wala? Hindi 'yan sarcastic, tanong lang talaga.)
When the specs left to ask about are too, well, specific, it all boils down to...
Mahirap ba ang Math?
I hold my new friend's hand, look him in the eyes and say, yes! Hahaha! My dad always says no degree is easy to earn. Math, probably like any other course, is no counterexample.
